About FUMI

"I love the dynamics of fluidity, creativity, and simultaneous precision required in treating each person with oriental medicine. The process is as much of a work of art as of science."

I graduated from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine with MAcOM, and am licensed in Oregon to practice both acupuncture and oriental herbal medicine. I also have an MA in Asian Studies focusing on anthropology from University of Oregon. Native from Japan, but over a half of my life has been spent in Oregon by now. Before switching the gear to Chinese medicine, I completed a 3 years long advanced yoga teacher training with a strong influence of Zhander Remete's Shadow Yoga, and have also practiced Astanga yoga intensively prior to the teacher training. Yoga training gave me a foundational belief and perspectives in what it means to be healthy.

I have been quite active most of my life, and have suffered numerous injuries in most joints in my body. The recovery process from each injury, some of which are still ongoing, has been giving me a lot of insight and knowledge about sports/overuse injuries, various kinds of joint pain, aging process and its impact on joint pain, especially for women (naturally), along with therapeutic exercises, supplements and diet to cope with.

Over the past years since I entered this healing practice, I realized my goal has evolved somewhat, or I have been gaining more clarity in my role: In every treatment, I’m merely helping my patient navigate to bring back the trust in their innate unique healing capacity, like removing one piece of rubble at a time from a collapsed building site to find the precious little something. Anybody can benefit from being reminded of how capable, creative, and resilient they truly are, and with each baby step they take to reclaim their forever truth, I see them start beaming with vitality and joy and relief in their eyes. Few things are more satisfying to experience than being part of somebody’s healing journey to me.

I love the dynamics of fluidity, creativity, and simultaneous precision required in treating each person with oriental medicine. The process is as much of a work of art as of science. When I meet a new person and start a journey of transformation with them, it gives me an opportunity to be as curious and excited as the person. When I am not engaged in medicine, I enjoy hiking, camping, snowboarding, exercising at the gymorigami making, qigong, yoga, movies, music shows, cooking, and sewing to bring a new life to an old piece of cloths.
